Car Health

Maintaining your car is important if you want it to run without problems and stay like new. Here are some maintenance tips. Before you hit the road, make sure your car is in good mechanical condition and you should know what to do if it fails.

Check Fluid Levels
Engine oil, brake and power steering fluids are the life blood of your car. They should be checked frequently. Look out for signs of leakage. Take your car in for maintenance and repair if it begins to make sounds or actions that are out of the ordinary.

Safety Check
Your safety depends on your car's brakes, exhaust system, tyres, lights, windshield wipers and washer, battery, hoses and belts. Make sure they are not worn out and are in good working order.

Tyre Inflation
Few people realise under-inflated or worn out tyres offer far less steering, handling and braking control than properly inflated tyres. Check them regularly.

Emergency Equipment
It is wise to carry the following items: tyre gauge, flashlight with extra batteries, reflectors, pencil and notebook, blanket, gloves, fire extinguisher, extra fan belts and basic tools including screwdrivers, pliers and adjustable wrench. Make sure you know where you keep your jack for changing a flat tyre and make sure the spare has air.

Mechanical Problem
If you have mechanical problems or your engine fails while driving, pull off the road and seek help. If the brakes fail, steer off the road and try pumping the brakes to build up pressure. Safe and courteous driving means no accident. By knowing and following the rules of the road and staying alert, you'll enjoy your time behind the wheel.
