Don't Let Friend Drive Drunk

Traffic crashes are the leading causes of death and injury for Malaysians. With the festive season around the corner don't let your holiday scene turn into a crash scene.

The festive season is one of the deadliest and most dangerous times of the year due to the increase in impaired driving.

In fact, according to records available from the traffic police indicate that a total of 515 lives were lost due to road crashes, just during the month of January 2005. another 513 people were killed during the same month in 2004.

With the all the lunar new year parties, this is a critically important time of the year to make sure you always designate a sober driver before the party begins and always remember: ”don't let friends drive drunk”

SOBER DRIVER

Designating a sober driver and not letting friends drive drunk are just two of several simple steps to help avoid a tragic crash or an arrest for impaired driving. Other important steps include:

  • if you are impaired, call a taxi or call a sober friend or a family member to get you home safely.
  • Report impaired drivers to law enforcement.
  • Always back up – it is your best defense against impaired drivers.
  • Spend the night where the activity is being held and sleep it off.

If you are hosting a party and plan to serve alcoholic beverages, remind your guest to designate their sober drivers in advance and  then make sure all your guest leave with a sober driver at the end of the party. Driving impaired or riding with someone who is impaired is clearly not worth the risk. The consequence can be deadly. Impaired driving is no accident nor it is a victim less crime. It is one the deadliest problems of the country.

Between 12 and 17 lives are being lost everyday in road crashes. These crashes are the leading cause of death and injury to Malaysians. The carnage can and must be stopped through stronger vehicle safety standards, improved driver awareness and other key measures.

Period high intensity and sustained enforcement crackdowns, supported by coordinated media plan can prove to be an effective counter measure for reducing impaired driving fatalities. The high visibility enforcement programs can also affect the behavior of drivers through general deterrence by increasing the publics perception that people who violate the law will be ticketed, arrested, convicted, and punishes and thereby persuading them top adhere to the law.
