Postpone Your Car's Expiry Date

You can prolong the life of your vehicle by a considerable margin and save a few bucks in the process by following a few basic car care principles.
Place sunshades in the windscreen whenever you leave your vehicle in the sun. If possible, leave the windows slightly open to prevent the internal temperature from reaching boiling point. Use a good polish with a UV filter to protect the dashboard and ensure a lasting shine.

Loose mats over the existing carpets and additional seat covers are guaranteed to extend the life of the interior. A good quality exterior wax can make your vehicle looks as good as new. If the car is covered in dust or mud, first hose the body down. Never use household detergent to wash your car.

Combat rust by spraying a protective lubricant on the inside of the fenders, doors, and the framework of the car.

Don’t park under trees. Leaves, seeds, flowers, and plant sap can stain the paintwork and clog drainage holes, leading to rust.

Imagine, your car is being subjected to all the above abuses even while stationary. Think about the wear and tear that could occur during the actual usage of the vehicle? Components in the engine and gearbox are some of the most hard working in the entire vehicle. Some of the components rotate literally trillions of times during the lifetime of the vehicle. When you start your car cold, let it idle for a few minutes to help it heat up properly and reduce wear and tear on the engine.

Regular servicing and maintenance will optimise the performances and fuel consumption of your car. Short trips cause condensation to collect in the exhaust pipe. The acid in the condensation will hasten rusting of the exhaust from inside.

The driver’s skill and ability to pull away without jerks and shudders or flooring the accelerator – and conversely to slow down smoothly instead of crashing to a complete stop – will largely determine how long the engine, clutch, braking system and drive shafts last. These components are extremely costly to replace and once again sensible use will help prevent car maintenance expenses from burning a hole in your pocket.

Maintaining a safe following distance is not only essential for road safety, but will also prevent stones and sand causing damage to the windscreen and lights. Avoid potholes, pavements and rough terrain to protect your tyres. Next time you are out, note the debris, bits of iron, tyre, broken spares, stones and glass littering this area.

Heavy loads also reduce a vehicle’s life. Components such as shock absorbers and clutch, as well as the undercarriage, gearbox engine, steering, and braking mechanisms labour under much greater strain.

Tyres deserve particular attention. Not only are they subjected to the most exposure, but are also most neglected. Tyres should be checked, balanced and rotated on a regular basis.
